Gospel
Matthew 18:1-5, 10
The disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?" He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, "Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me. "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father."
Sermon
My brothers and sisters in Christ, today's Gospel reading presents a profound question: "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?" Jesus' response is unexpected, yet revolutionary. He calls a child into their midst and declares that unless we become like children, we will not enter the Kingdom.
The Disciples' Question:
The disciples' inquiry reveals their misunderstanding of God's kingdom. They're seeking status, power, and prestige. But Jesus' answer upends their expectations.
The Child's Example:
Jesus holds up a child as the model of greatness. What does this mean?
- Humility: Children are dependent, vulnerable, and trusting.
- Innocence: Children approach life with wonder and simplicity.
- Openness: Children are receptive and eager to learn.
Becoming Like Children:
To enter the Kingdom, we must "turn and become like children." This requires:
- Letting go of pride and self-importance
- Embracing dependence on God
- Cultivating simplicity and trust
Receiving the Child:
Jesus links receiving a child with receiving Him. This means:
- Welcoming the vulnerable and marginalized
- Embracing those who may seem insignificant
- Recognizing the sacred value of every human life
Protecting the Little Ones:
Jesus warns against despising or harming children, emphasizing their heavenly connection. Their angels constantly behold God's face.
Implications for Us:
As followers of Jesus, we must:
- Prioritize humility and dependence on God
- Welcome and serve the vulnerable
- Recognize the sacred value of every human life
Conclusion:
May we embrace childlike humility, recognizing that true greatness lies in serving others and trusting God.
