Gospel
Luke 10:38-42
Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me. The Lord said to her in reply “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”
Sermon
My brothers and sisters in Christ, today's Gospel reading presents Jesus' visit to Martha and Mary's home. Martha's busyness contrasts with Mary's focus on Jesus' words.
The Busy Host:
Martha welcomes Jesus, but is:
- Burdened with serving
- Distracted by tasks
- Frustrated with Mary's inaction
The Devoted Disciple:
Mary:
- Sits at Jesus' feet
- Listens to His words
- Chooses the better part
Jesus' Response:
- Martha, you are anxious and worried
- Only one thing is necessary
- Mary has chosen the better part
Implications for Us:
- Prioritize time with Jesus
- Focus on eternal truths
- Balance service and contemplation
- Recognize what truly matters
Conclusion:
May we emulate Mary's devotion, prioritizing Jesus' words.

We pray for:
- Hearts centered on Jesus
- Minds focused on eternal truths
- Balance between service and contemplation
- Recognition of what truly matters
In Jesus' most holy name, Amen.
