Gospel
Luke 8:1-3
Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.
Sermon
My brothers and sisters in Christ, today's Gospel passage gives us a glimpse into Jesus' ministry as he travels from town to town, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. But what's striking is not just Jesus' message, but the company he keeps.
Accompanying Jesus are the Twelve apostles, but also a group of women who have been transformed by his power. Mary Magdalene, once possessed by seven demons, Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward, and Susanna, are just a few examples.
These women are not just passive observers; they are active participants in Jesus' ministry. They have been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, and now they provide for Jesus and the apostles out of their own resources.
This passage challenges our assumptions about who is worthy to follow Jesus. These women, once marginalized and oppressed, are now integral members of Jesus' entourage.
May we be inspired by their example to recognize the value and worth of every individual. May we see the potential for transformation and redemption in those around us.
Prayer
Let us pray: + In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Almighty, merciful, and loving God, we thank you for the example of Jesus, who welcomed and empowered marginalized and oppressed individuals to follow him. We pray for a deeper understanding of his message and mission.
Help us to recognize the value and worth of every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances. May we see the potential for transformation and redemption in those around us.
We lift up those who are marginalized and oppressed, praying for their empowerment and liberation. May your church be a beacon of hope and transformation.
Guide us as we seek to welcome and include others in our community. Show us practical ways to support and uplift those who are struggling.
Thank you for the transformative power of Jesus' message. May we be inspired by the examples of Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna, who were transformed by his power and became integral members of his entourage.
We pray for ourselves, that we may be willing to follow Jesus wherever he leads, and to welcome others to join us on this journey.
In Jesus' most holy name we pray, Amen.
Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,
