Gospel
Luke 9:7-9
Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying, “John has been raised from the dead”; others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”; still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.” But Herod said, “John beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see him.
Sermon
My brothers and sisters in Christ, today's Gospel presents Herod, a symbol of worldly power, confronted with the rumors surrounding Jesus.
Herod's perplexity stems from his inability to grasp the true nature of Jesus' mission.
Some speculated:
- John the Baptist risen from the dead
- Elijah reappeared
- An ancient prophet reborn
Herod's response reveals his inner turmoil:
"John I beheaded. Who then is this?"
Herod's actions had consequences:
- He silenced John's voice
- Yet, Jesus' message continued to spread
This passage challenges us:
1. The limits of worldly power
2. The danger of spiritual ignorance
3. The persistence of God's message
Herod's story serves as a cautionary tale:
- Power and wealth cannot silence the Gospel
- Violence and oppression cannot halt God's plan
- Spiritual blindness leads to confusion and fear
In contrast, Jesus' teachings offer:
- Hope to the marginalized
- Freedom to the oppressed
- Light to those in darkness
As followers of Christ, we are called:
- To proclaim God's message boldly
- To stand against injustice
- To shine His light in the darkness
May we, unlike Herod, recognize Jesus as the source of true power and authority.
May we, empowered by the Holy Spirit, boldly proclaim Jesus as the source of true power and authority. Amen.
Prayer
Let us pray: + In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Almighty, merciful, and loving God, we pray for clarity in understanding Jesus' mission and message.
Give us courage to boldly proclaim your Gospel, standing against injustice and shining your light in the darkness.
Guide those in positions of power to recognize Jesus' authority, that they may use their influence for your glory.
Forgive us for times when we have silenced or ignored your voice.
Protect us from spiritual blindness, that we may see your truth and follow your path.
Thank you for the persistence of your message, which no power or wealth can silence.
We pray for:
- Clarity in understanding Jesus' mission
- Courage to proclaim God's message
- Guidance in standing against injustice
- Recognition of Jesus' authority among world leaders
- Protection from spiritual ignorance
May God empower us to boldly proclaim His message, shining His light in a world filled with darkness and confusion.
In Jesus' most holy name, Amen
Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,
Rev. Fr. Jhimerson Maneclang,SCJ
